wacky bar
we saw the ad last week and decided on a whim to go for it. it was a pay-as-you-can kind of preview. we got a pretty good deal — rm25 each and a free ticket for the elderly who lived in pj. [they were trying to get the pj crowd!]
so, though tired out, i dragged my feet there — actually the elderly lady drove. so much for chivalry and gallantry! and the other older lady was already texting us while we were headed there. that day, another elderly lady had commented that i was wasting my time — spending it with old people! anyway, i digressed.
we reached the place and found out that it was free seating. the place was new. not as big as klpac but viable for smaller and cosier performances. it was packed crowded — everybody wants a freebie! the cast was a great corwd puller — more than 12, i think.
the first half was a little draggy and slow. they were a little nervous, i suppose. but mostly the flaw was the script. it was a little too contrived for comedy. so the comic punches were hardly visible. and because it was a comedy, nervouseness didnt do much to the cominc timing — it sort of flatted out right after the first 10 minutes.
there were two acts — three parts in each act. each part displayed a situation you would find in a bar. part 1 fell flat right after the first 5 mins of awe. part 2 continued drunkenly bad with two women acting badly as drunks — trying too hard. i blame it on first night jitters. the thrid part had some acting promise and the two leads had better chemistry and less, much less nervousness. although patrick teoh as Wacky, the bartender, was fun and proved a great distraction with his comic one-liners.
the second half proved fabulously funny, lapsing only in minor places. mostly the actiing was not nervy and i felt comfortable watching the scenes unfold. though the storylines (or lack of) were not that new, it was a refreshing take due to the comic timing of the actors.
the people that stood out in the second half: Junji Delfino and Elaine Pedly. but i think the ladies i went with were taken by gavin yap and rashid salleh in the first half. however, we were all a little amused by iedil putra's performance as the asian male escort.
